auto racing - Goodwood Revival 2009 - The First Day of Racing and Ladies Day

The track was blessed by Canon Lionel Webber, chaplain to the British Racing Drivers Club, around 9.15am before Lord March opened proceedings with the first race of the day, the Goodwood Trophy…a spectacular array of the ERAs…very thrilling. Chris Rea raced his Lotus VI in the second race of the day, the Madgewick Cup, managing to hold on to 13th position throughout most of the race.

The Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy was next with the legendary Wayne Gardner taking up pole position only to drop back to second place after the switch over mid race to his racing partner. On Sunday the riders will change over, leaving Wayne as the second rider…so, we’ll see what happens then!

At approximately 11.10 am Rowan Atkinson, who unfortunately was not racing this weekend, did three circuits of the track sat in an armchair on top of his famous mini from the television serious Mr. Bean ahead of the line up for the St. Mary’s Trophy Part One which consisted purely of Minis this year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this iconic car. Unfortunately the antics of “Mr. Bean” completely deflected some of the attention away from Lord Mandelson’s thoughts on the British car industry!

As of right now, BMW, Mercedes, Renalt, Ferrari and Toyota supply engines but BMW is pulling out after the 2009 season and Ferrari does not know if they will continue when their contract is up in 2012. Ferrari has been with the sport of F1 for over 60 consecutive years, you know there is a problem if they are pulling out.

The museum held some interesting pieces this year, including the 1953 Zephyr Six belonging to the Ford Heritage Collection which is a faithful replica of VHK 194, the outright winner of the 1953 Monte Carlo Rally.

Also on show was a Mini Wildgoose Camper van…now there’s a compact little thing and certainly no room to swing a cat…metaphorically speaking!

I am not a huge fan of Formula One but a lot of great technology comes out of the sport, especially in engine development. What other company makes superior engines to BMW and Ferrari?
