Basketball Goals: Nothing But Net

Everyone knows the goal in basketball is to get the ball into the net. Whether you watch kids, teens, or adults play, they are all giving it their best to get the ball into the net. But are all nets the same? They may appear to be, but there are many fun and functional choices available to increase your basketball fun!

Standard nets are made of anti-whip nylon. They are white and are 21 inches long. If you laid a net flat before hooking it to the rim, you would see it has an hour glass shape. There are 12 loops to hang on the 12 hooks of a standard rim. This is the type of net you may be used to seeing in professional and competitive style basketball, but there are many more basketball hoop net options available.

Light up nets are a fun way to add some excitement to your game. They are a unique addition to a home basketball hoop. Some light up hoops just light up to give extra light if you are playing at night. Other light up hoops light up when points are scored and the lights move around the rim. Lighted rims come in a variety of colors.  Most light up nets have a small battery that hooks under the rim.

If you have an outside basketball goal, an all-weather net will last longer than a standard net. All weather nets are still made of nylon but are double or triple thick to withstand all types of weather. Many versions of all weather nets can be washed in the washer and dried for even more play time.

Another choice is a colored nylon net. Colored nets are still made of anti-whip nylon, but come in a variety of choices. You can pick your favorite color, or your team’s color to show your support. Some colored nets are multi-colored such as a patriotic red, white, and blue net. Colored nets are also a fun way to teach little kids which net they are going for.

For outside basketball goals, another option is a steel chain link net. These definitely make a different kind of “swoosh” sound, but also make a statement. Chain link nets are coated to be rust resistant and withstand different kinds of weather. The downside to chain link nets is the possibility of injury. Unlike anti-whip nylon, hands or fingers can become entangled, so players should be careful.

Nylon strap nets are a new, but exciting option. They are made of the same nylon as standard nets but the nylon is woven together differently. Nylon strap nets are made from wide, flat pieces of nylon. They have extra stitching for extra durability. Since the space between the loops is bigger, they are less prone to causing injuries.

Try stepping outside the box to add some unique style to your basketball goal with a different type of net. No matter what you choose, aim the ball for the net and score!
